Create Your Own Wall Art

I think this is the easiest yet most ‘wow factor’ project that I have tackled for the True Value DIY Squad. As an interior decorator I go into a lot of people’s homes, and one common trend that I see is a big problem with artwork. Either a home owner has nothing up on the wall or they have bad artwork reproductions on the wall that were picked up at big box retailer. Artwork is a wonderful thing, and it should be personal to the home owner. It's a great way to show people what you love and your style. The main problem clients have with artwork is that it can be a high ticket purchase and people tend to get shy with actually making the purchase when it's something that's purely decorative and not a piece of furniture that they can utilize.

DIY Industrial Hanging Pots

Hi! It's Taryn from Design, Dining and Diapers! Since the New Year I've been busy working on our new family room (you can see peeks of it here), and I'm finally in the stage of pulling all the little details together and filling blank wall space. During our inspection we learned that there are several pipes running behind one of the walls in our family room and were advised not to hang anything on the walls in that section. Eeek! If I can't hang anything what do I do? So I decided to hang something from the ceiling!

DIY Dresser Revamp

Years ago, in what seems like another life, I worked in a buying office for a big home goods store based out of New York. Along with carrying items like bedding, towels and dishes they also carried bigger items like bedroom furniture. It was the time of the bedroom set, so when Jon and I first moved in together we used my discount to pick one up. It came with the bed, two nightstands and a dresser. Slowly the set has been dismantled and the only thing left in my bedroom was the dresser. It was expensive and well made so I always felt bad getting rid of it, but it wasn't my style anymore. I knew I needed to update it in order to be happy, and as I was walking the aisles of True Value I had an aha moment and knew exactly how I could update it.

Beadboard And Bathroom Hooks

Hey everyone! Allison here, from House of Hepworths. Today I'm going to share a DIY project with you showcasing how to make a space more functional while updating the aesthetic value as well. One of our bathrooms doubles as a bathroom for our daughter and for guests, so we wanted to make the room more useful. To do so, we decided to add a row of hooks along the wall to hang up bath and beach towels, robes, and the like. This will be especially beneficial for about 9 months out of the year here in Texas, when it's usually nice enough outside to take a dip in the pool.

Canned Goods Storage

We are in the process of upgrading our dated and not-so-functional pantry. The old, rusted wire shelving has been replaced with wooden shelves in a more user-friendly layout. Instead of wrapping the shelving around the entire pantry, we opted to leave the back wall open and create a narrow canned goods shelving system instead.

DIY Jewelry Organizer

Ever since we moved into our new home, I spend much less time in my kids’ rooms since we have a first-floor master. I don't really need to go upstairs much unless I'm going up to chitchat or say goodnight. The other week I was in my daughter's room and noticed her jewelry all over the place and no organization at all, and I started to get the organizing itch.

Make your own Chalk Paint (DIY refinished end table)

End tables are a dime a dozen at tag sales…and they are the best way to test out your painting/refinishing skills. Folks worry all the time… “What if I paint it and don’t like it!?!” but when you start out with a beat up $10 table, there should be no worries in your mind at all! Just go for it! Chalk paint is all the rage because of the weathered finish it gives to painted pieces. What I love about it is that it’s hard to mess up. There is no need to be perfect…the look you are going for is imperfect—sounds perfect right?!? (perfectly confusing??) Ok, this is how easy it is to make your own chalk paint with any latex (water based) paint that you may have lying around.

Update Bookcase with Crown Moldings

I have always been a fan of custom built-in bookcases but have been intimated by their price and the skill required to create them. However, about a year ago I enlisted the help of my father and a few other skilled family members to help me transform a few bookcases into a custom entertainment unit. I was thrilled with the results and learned that a little paint and crown molding goes a long way.

Deck Maintenance

The addition of a deck is one of the most popular home improvement projects. A well-designed, well-built deck not only expands the outdoor living space of your home but increases the property value as well. Whether you choose wood or composite decking, the truth is both require some form of general maintenance to ensure a long lasting, safe, sound structure. Decks take the most abuse of any surface around the home. From heavy foot traffic to year-round sun, rain and snow, they must be maintained, protected and able to withstand constant harsh elements and abuse.

Staining Your Deck

It’s summertime, and you know what that means: we're spending a lot more time outside grilling and just relaxing on our porches and decks. When summer arrived this year, I took a good, hard look at my screened porch and decks and realized they were all badly in need of some freshening up. We had many days of heavy rains at the end of summer last year that, along with all the trees that extend over my decks, turned the decks a nice shade of green/brown. Yuck.

A Rustic Table

Hello there! How was your weekend? We had a great one - guess WHAT? Stink Eye Sis got engaged!! :) So excited! So now we have a wedding to plan - how fun is that? We also continued to get some stuff done outside. Make that ME - hubby was out of town and I sweated out a third of my body weight (I WISH) and worked on some outdoor projects. Funny that the temps have "dropped" into the 80's and are a bit more bearable, but that coincided with humidity out the wazoo.
